Tips for Breaking Up With Writer's Block

Whether you’re writing a maid of honor speech for your sister, trying to get your love down on paper, or prepping to officiate a friend’s wedding, sometimes the blank page can be too much. While there’s never a great time for writer’s block right now — while you’re preparing for such a special day — is definitely not the right time. We’re here to help reduce your stress with a few helpful tips for how to shake off writer’s block.

Take a break: Sometimes, the best thing you can do to get over writer's block is to step away from your work and give your brain a chance to rest. Go for a walk, do some light exercise, or engage in a different activity for a while. When you come back to your writing, you may find that your mind is clearer and more focused.

Write freely: Sometimes, writer's block can be caused by trying too hard to be perfect or by being too self-conscious about what you're writing. Try setting aside your inner critic and just allowing yourself to write freely, without worrying about grammar or structure. This can help you get into a flow and may even lead to some unexpected and creative ideas.

Change your environment: Sometimes, a change of scenery can help get the creative juices flowing. Try working in a different location, such as a coffee shop or a park, or switch up your routine by writing at a different time of day.

Get organized: If you're feeling overwhelmed or disorganized, it can be hard to focus on writing. Take some time to get your thoughts and ideas organized, either by outlining your work or by using a mind-mapping tool. This can help you see the big picture and make it easier to move forward.

Get inspired: If you’re not making any progress, try another route. Our toolkits for Best Men and Maids of Honor (as well as our Wedding Vows Toolkit) can help you with everything from brainstorming to writing (with the help of our template speeches!) to editing and, finally, practicing. Plus each toolkit has full-length examples speeches to help inspire you.

Get feedback: If you're feeling stuck, it can be helpful to get feedback from someone else. This could be a friend, a writing group, or a professional editor (yep, we’ve got you covered there too!). Having someone else look at your work can provide a fresh perspective and help you see things in a new light.
