As the maid of honor, you have a special role to play (learn more about the history of the role). You might support the couple with the wedding planning process, plan pre-events, help on the big day itself, or simply be emotional support throughout the process.
Regardless, here are some tips for navigating this important role:

Communicate with the bride. Once you say “yes” to being the maid of honor (after you’ve made sure your budget can handle it!), ask the bride what she’s expecting help with in the lead-up to the big day. This will help you plan ahead and allow you to support her with making the wedding vision a reality. And then once that’s established, make sure to stay in close communication with her throughout the planning process and be willing to lend a helping hand wherever it's needed.
Get organized. With so many details to manage, it's important to stay organized. Consider using Google Drive, an old-fashioned paper planner, or a wedding app to keep track of tasks and deadlines.
Know the budget. Depending on the couple's budget, you may be asked to help with wedding planning duties such as booking vendors or managing the guest list. Make sure to communicate with the couple about their financial constraints and help them stay on track.
Plan/attend pre-wedding events. As the maid of honor, you'll likely be expected to plan or at least attend pre-wedding events such as the bridal shower and bachelorette party. Make sure to clear your schedule ahead of time so you can be present for these special occasions.

Stand up for the bride. On the big day itself, your main duty is to stand up for the bride as she walks down the aisle. Make sure to be there for the rehearsal so you can practice walking (yeah, we know you know how to walk, but it’s important to know who’s going in what order) and know exactly where to stand tall and proud as you support her on this important day.
Speak up for the bride. You’ll most likely be asked to give a speech at the reception. Be sure to prep ahead of time so that on the big day you can deliver a perfectly poised, thoughtful toast.
Be a shoulder to lean on: Weddings can be stressful, and the maid of honor is often called upon to be a support system for the bride. Be there to listen and offer comfort and encouragement when needed.
Last but not least… try to relax and enjoy. You’ll have more fun and be able to support your friend with grace and confidence, making the wedding planning process and the big day itself a success.
